What is a lactation consultant?

A lactation consultant can mean different things to different people. I have a year course from UCSD in lactation specific education, hundreds of mentored lactation clinical hours and required college courses that allowed me to sit for an international exam. I am an IBCLC which stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. If you are looking for an LC, and experiencing ALOT of problems in nursing, make sure you find someone with the IBCLC initials after their name.

Does insurance cover the cost of a lactation visit?

This is a yes and no question. Some insurance plans will state in their benefit plan that a lactation consultant is covered. However, they want you to see someone in network. Unfortunately, alot of insurance companies won’t make a lactation consultant an in network provider. They expect you to see a physician or an IBCLC working for a pediatrician.  I have spent hundreds of dollars and a year’s time to fight for this. Unfortunately, no one came through except Aetna. I am an in-network provider for Aetna. I will not bill for any other company despite what your insurance company says.

How many visits do I need?

Majority of clients receive the most benefits and success in as little as 3 visits. By the time someone seeks out an IBCLC, there are multiple issues going on. Just like if you were going to go see a counselor for an unresolved problem.  By the time you see the counselor, it is not about a single argument you had last week.

What goes on during a consultation?

I ask you alot of questions to find out what is currently going on with your health and the baby. I assess the baby’s suck. I assess the baby’s ability to breastfeeding. I assess your breasts and nipples. I assess what can you do. Then we come up with a do-able plan of action.

Can I Call You If I Have Questions?

If you are not an establish client meaning, I have not taken your consent and provided a full assessment, legally I can not answer any questions. Please call your pediatrician or a Le Leche League Leader in your area.

If you are an established client, for every visit you receive 1 text or email response per visit is provided. If you need additional help via phone or text please pay for those additional services.
