Breast lymph drainage

My breasts are hard, swollen or plugged

One of the best kept secrets for plugged ducts and severe engorgement is breast lymphatic drainage: a feather-light touch, about five grams of pressure, with no pain involved.

Why it works when squeezing does not

When a breast is engorged, much of the swelling is fluid in the tissue around the milk ducts, not only milk. Pressing harder makes it worse. Lymphatic drainage moves that fluid out with very light, slow strokes, so milk can flow again and your baby can latch.

You should not have to endure severe breast pain for any reason.

An IBCLC and a massage therapist in one visit

Julie is both a board certified lactation consultant and a licensed massage therapist who specializes in breast lymph drainage. She treats the breast, checks the latch that may have caused the problem, and teaches you the technique so you can keep things moving at home.

Questions moms ask

Does it hurt?

No. The pressure is about five grams, roughly the weight of a nickel. Most moms find it a relief.

When should I call a doctor instead?

If you have a fever, flu-like aches, or a red, hot area on the breast, call your doctor or midwife: those can be signs of mastitis that needs medical care. Julie can work alongside that treatment.

Is it covered by insurance?

It can be part of a covered lactation visit on several plans. Ask Julie when you book and she will tell you how your plan handles it.
