Sore nipples and breasts

It hurts to nurse

Pain in your nipples or breasts is not normal, no matter who has told you otherwise. By the time most moms call Julie, it is very rarely something they are doing wrong.

You are not failing

Most moms reach a lactation consultant in crisis mode, sure that no one understands the pain they have pushed through for days, weeks or months. Ongoing pain wears you down, and it makes you question yourself as a mother. That is the pain talking, not the truth.

Julie has worked with thousands of women. Her job is to find out why it hurts, fix what can be fixed that day, and leave you with a plan you can follow when she is gone.

What Julie looks for

She watches a full feed: how your baby latches, how the tongue and lips move, how your baby's body is positioned and whether anything is tight. Because she is also a licensed massage therapist and craniosacral therapist, she can work hands-on with your baby's body and with your breasts in the same visit.

If the cause is a tongue or lip tie, plugged ducts or engorgement, she will tell you plainly and walk you through the next step.

Questions moms ask

Is some pain normal in the first weeks?

Tenderness in the first days is common. Pain that makes you dread a feed, cracked or bleeding nipples, or pain that continues through the feed is a sign that something can be fixed. It is worth a visit.
